Think they just measured the angle between us, the sun & the object at both extremes of Earths orbit around the sun, and then knowing what Earths orbit is (i.e. 1 AU) you can use trig to work out how far away the other object is.

So going by that article you posted, the answer would be Parallax, right? Maybe adding, triangulation wouldn't hurt.
